This project focused on the strategic repurposing of existing square footage to better serve the school’s athletic and technical education departments. By reconfiguring underutilized areas, the school gained a significantly larger and more accessible weight room, along with modernized environments for the wood shop and Project Lead The Way (PLTW) programs. The renovation also included the creation of supporting classroom spaces, ensuring that the industrial arts and physical education wings are fully integrated with the school’s academic goals.
Transforming these older interior spaces into high-performance labs and fitness centers required creative solutions to address existing structural, mechanical, and acoustical constraints. A notable challenge involved the installation of a new glass overhead door within an existing structural precast concrete exterior wall. This required the design of specialized structural reinforcements to maintain the building’s integrity while accommodating the large opening. These technical updates were carefully coordinated to ensure the new mechanical systems could handle the specific ventilation needs of the industrial arts equipment.
The completed weight room now provides a flexible, professional-grade environment that meets the diverse needs of both the physical education curriculum and the athletic programs. The addition of the glass overhead door provides student-athletes with direct exterior access and fills the space with natural light. Adjacent to the fitness area, the new industrial arts wing features all-new equipment and technology, including dedicated maker space tools and instructional areas. By revitalizing its existing footprint, Churubusco Jr-Sr High School now offers students a sophisticated, technology-rich environment for both physical and technical development.
