To meet the needs of its athletic and performing arts programs, Eastside Jr/Sr High School required a dedicated multi-purpose space for basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, and track and field, as well as co-curricular activities like band and cheerleading. This project centered on a significant fieldhouse-style addition designed to house these diverse programs while providing essential support areas, including a new weight room, locker rooms, restrooms, and storage. To maintain architectural continuity, the design and materials were meticulously selected to blend with the existing building’s appearance, resulting in a seamless campus expansion.
Integrating this substantial addition required navigating a somewhat landlocked site with notable topographical challenges. A detailed assessment was conducted to manage the impacts on the existing campus and to ensure the new footprint worked within the site’s physical constraints. The final design successfully sited the addition on the north side of the building, providing students with easy, direct access to both indoor and outdoor athletic and performing arts spaces throughout the campus.
The completed Aaron Willard Student Activity Center features a main activity area with a strategic combination of synthetic and hardwood flooring, offering versatile relief space for various student programs during and after school hours. In addition to the primary activity zones, the new wing provides modern weight room facilities and updated student locker and restroom spaces. This expansion effectively resolves the school’s spatial needs while creating a cohesive, high-performance environment for the entire student body.
