This project added a dedicated preschool wing to Monroe Central Elementary, featuring three new classrooms, restrooms, a conference room, and support spaces. Each large classroom is organized into three zones—instruction, activity, and utility—allowing staff to structure the day into focused, age-appropriate modules.
The existing school’s layout—four wings surrounding a central core under a broad-pitched roof—created a complex challenge for locating the new addition. The most logical site sat at a roof valley, making the connection between new and existing structures technically intricate.
After exploring multiple roof configuration options with the client, the design team developed a solution that seamlessly integrates the new and existing rooflines when viewed from the main public approach. The final design not only maintains the visual character of the original building but also discreetly screens new rooftop mechanical systems, ensuring a cohesive and efficient addition to the campus.
