Wa-Nee Community Schools expanded the existing 1970s activity center as part of a larger high school improvement effort that included multiple additions and renovations. The goal was to enhance athletic, fitness, and instructional spaces while working within the constraints of the original pre-engineered structure.
The main challenge was the limited width of the existing athletic center, which restricted how the new program could fit within the addition. Careful planning and design were required to maximize functionality without compromising circulation or performance needs.
To create the needed space, the racquetball court and storage areas were removed to make room for an interior running track surrounding the courts. Two new wood courts were added within the expanded gym, and a new masonry-built wing now houses a weight room, locker rooms, and a classroom.
A recent follow-up project introduced a new connecting corridor between the high school and the activity center, allowing students to move between buildings safely and efficiently during physical education and extracurricular activities.
