Wa-Nee Community Schools Transportation

The development of a ground-up transportation center for Wa-Nee Community Schools provided a centralized home base for the district’s fleet and maintenance operations. Previously, the department lacked a dedicated facility to house buses or perform essential repairs. By establishing this on-site hub, the district was able to internalize maintenance tasks, leading to significant long-term cost savings and providing the transportation staff with the functional, professional home they required.

Because this was an entirely new building type for the district, a primary challenge involved defining the specific technical needs and specialized requirements of the department. To assist staff who had no previous point of reference for such a facility, the design team fostered thought-provoking conversations and facilitated tours of other regional transportation centers. These collaborative site visits allowed the staff to evaluate different workflows and determine which features—from bay layouts to administrative flow—would be most beneficial for their new space.

The resulting facility is designed for maximum efficiency, featuring four maintenance bays equipped with mobile lifts that can be deployed to any bay as needed. To streamline service and maintain a clear, safe floor, fluid distribution systems are piped overhead directly to each service bay. The building also introduced a drive-through bus wash, providing an automated solution for fleet cleaning that was previously unavailable. Beyond the garage, the facility includes dedicated office space for transportation staff and a driver training room that serves a dual purpose as a secondary training venue for the entire district.
