Concord High School undertook a series of strategic improvements through two distinct projects—Fitness and Vocational—aimed at expanding student opportunities and modernizing aging infrastructure. Prior to these updates, the school’s weight room was located in an undersized, upstairs space that had become unsafely crowded, while vocational offerings were limited by a lack of specialized facilities. To address these needs, the project introduced high-performance athletic space and a dedicated vocational wing, alongside a broader effort to improve internal circulation throughout the campus.
Integrating the vocational addition required a careful master planning approach, including the removal of an existing outbuilding to make way for the new structure. Beyond expanding the curriculum, the design was leveraged to alleviate interior congestion; two large, underutilized courtyards were transformed into expansive hallways and commons areas, creating better avenues for students to connect across the school. Throughout the design phase, special consideration was given to industry-specific needs, ensuring the facilities aligned with the requirements of regional partners in the RV, crane, and industrial maintenance sectors.
The completed fitness addition now serves as a regional showpiece, featuring a naturally daylit environment with turf running lanes and raised platforms for optimized staff supervision. Meanwhile, the vocational addition provides a sophisticated mix of “clean” and “dirty” labs tailored for robotics, CAD, metalwork, woodworking, and industrial maintenance. The project also delivered a new Special Education (SPED) suite and additional classrooms, resulting in a versatile facility that balances high-level athletic training with robust career and technical education.
