Constructed as a ground-up facility in 2018, this 22,400-square-foot transportation center was designed to serve as a high-performance hub for the district’s fleet and regional partners. The facility features six service bays for buses and large vehicles, a dedicated small-vehicle bay, an automated indoor bus wash, and a fully equipped welding and machine shop. To support 24/7 reliability, the entire site is backed by emergency generator power and includes a secure, enclosed bus parking area with integrated on-site fueling infrastructure.

The project was driven by the unique success of the district’s transportation department. DeKalb County Eastern employs highly skilled mechanics who provide service-for-hire to neighboring school districts and local municipalities. Having outgrown their previous quarters, the district required a world-class facility capable of servicing more than just standard school buses, including heavy-duty municipal vehicles and fire apparatus.

The resulting design, situated on existing school property, delivers industrial-grade capabilities. Key features include two in-ground, multi-position lifts that adjust to varying axle lengths—strong enough to support a fully loaded fire truck for the nearby City of Butler. At the district’s request, the design also incorporated a large outdoor overhang, providing a shaded workspace for bus detailing and routine inspections. By moving these operations to the new site, the district was able to recapture valuable maintenance and storage space at the original facility adjacent to the high school campus.
