The creation of New Haven Intermediate gave grades 3–6 their own dedicated home for the first time. Previously split between a K–5 and 6–8 configuration, students now learn in a setting designed specifically for their age group—modeled on an elementary school-style curriculum while also preparing them for the transition to junior high.
The site’s tight footprint and proximity to the existing middle school demanded an efficient and thoughtful plan. Working closely with the district, the design team developed a two-story academic wing connected to an office and activity wing. This layout maximized usable space while also creating a natural separation between younger and older grade levels.
At the heart of the school, a large lobby connects the two wings and opens to both the main road and the adjacent neighborhood park—establishing dual front doors that welcome students, families, and the community from every direction. The result is a school that feels cohesive, connected, and purpose-built for students at a pivotal stage in their learning journey.
