After BCV assisted with a district-wide study on capacity and future needs, it became clear that Goshen Community Schools needed to expand its high school to support a growing student population. At the time of construction, 16 teachers were without dedicated classrooms and were functioning as “teachers on a cart,” and several areas of the building were dated and in need of updated uses and finishes. The project also served as one of the first CMc projects undertaken by an Indiana public school.

Accommodating the required number of classrooms on a tight urban site—and within an already large and varied building—presented significant challenges. The historic 1920s portion of the school stands three stories tall, while adjacent areas contain two-story classroom wings and the media center. Designing a new classroom addition beside the historic structure required a three-story stair tower that demanded both technical precision and an aesthetic approach that honored the original architecture.

The completed project provides Goshen High School with a new two-story addition containing 12 classrooms, including modern science labs. The media center was reimagined as a 21st-century learning hub with flexible spaces and a café, while outdated art rooms, labs, and shop areas were transformed into career and technical education spaces supporting robotics, Advanced Manufacturing, Building Trades, and Engineering. Together, these upgrades equip the school with modern, functional environments that meet the needs of today’s learners.
