To address enrollment growth and balance grade configurations across the district, Goshen Community Schools partnered with BCV and a committee of staff and administrators to conduct a comprehensive facilities analysis. The study concluded that building a new Grades 5–6 Intermediate School would relieve pressure on the elementary schools and better align the middle school population with available space.

Anticipating a regional masonry labor shortage during bidding, the design and construction management teams made a strategic decision early in the process to utilize a precast concrete structure instead of traditional masonry. However, the district emphasized the importance of maintaining a welcoming, student-centered aesthetic. BCV collaborated closely with the precast fabricator and construction manager to design a warm, engaging exterior that defied the cold, industrial look often associated with precast buildings.

The resulting facility achieves both design and construction goals—delivering a durable, cost-effective building without compromising appearance or character. While the interior incorporates select masonry elements, the full precast shell ensured the schedule and budget remained on track. Goshen Intermediate School has since been recognized by peer districts and design professionals as an exemplary, award-winning model for modern elementary-age education.
